What Are Stop Snoring Mouthpieces?
Heavy
snoring makes one very unpopular particularly if somebody is sleeping in the
same room. Many people who snore do not even realize that they do so. Once the
problem is recognized there are many options to contain it.
There are specific
exercises to improve breathing and thereby reduce the snoring. There is also the
option of using an anti-snoring pillow. There are sprays which have to be used in
the nose or in the throat, or some other medications. Even changes in diet will
help in some cases. There is also the option of using a stop-snoring
mouthpiece.
The type of option
to choose depends on the reason for snoring and also the method of snoring. A
doctor’s advice is useful to consider these and suggest the option best suited to a
person. The last option of course is surgery. The stop snoring
mouthpieces are made to fit the dimensions of the person’s mouth.
They have to be
worn through the night while sleeping. They keep the tongue and mouth in correct
position; they (the tongue and mouth) not being in the correct position while
sleeping is one of the reasons for snoring. In "tongue based" snorers, the tongue
goes backwards in the mouth while sleeping, and obstructs the airway for breathing;
this causes the air being breathed in to create a lot of
vibration.
In mouth breathers,
the air that is taken through the mouth while breathing creates a lot of vibration
and this causes the snoring sounds. This type of problem sometimes is because of
the anatomically small air passage in the nostrils. In such cases of snoring caused
by vibration of air being breathed in, stop snoring mouthpieces, sometimes called
"mandibular advancement devices", which move the tongue and jaw forward up to 12mm
to make the air passage wider, can help.
Persons having
false teeth, gum problems or other mandibular joint problems should take a doctor’s
advice before considering using such devices. These devices come in two options:
one, which can be assembled by the person who is wearing it, after making or
moulding to the size of the person’s mouth, and the other is one which has to be
fitted by a dentist.
As they work
physically by manipulation of the air passage way, the possible side effects have
to be carefully considered, if necessary by consulting a medical practitioner,
before deciding to use one such device. As mentioned above, the remedy for snoring
depends on the type and cause for snoring.
So, the device or
remedy that is useful for one person may not be useful to another. Clear
understanding of the reason for snoring is important before deciding on the remedy,
and for this understanding, consulting a medical practitioner for advice is most
advisable.
